Congratulations! You want to bring a book into the world. Here's some background on creating a book you may find helpful as you move forward.

Overview

Typically it takes a year for a book to appear from the time the manuscript reaches the publisher, and it typically takes six months to create a final manuscript. Prior to that, you have to develop a proposal, which takes several weeks to two months, depending on how clear you are on the content and how much research you need to do on competitive titles. And, of course, you have to get an agent to agree to represent you, which could take an unknown amount of time. So, here's the approximate timeline:

Month                                     Action

24-22                          Write proposal
21                                Show it to agents
20                                Sign agent
19                                Integrate agent's recommendations
18                                Agent sells book to publisher
18-12                           Write manuscript
16-14                           Editor and agent review chapters completed so far
12                                Send manuscript to publisher
9-6                              Integrate two rounds of edits from publisher
0                                  Publication!
