Helpful People, Travel, & Compassion

by Suzanne Metzger

As we journey through life’s many surprises, celebrations, and challenges, it is obvious that other people either facilitate our path or make it more difficult. Life is not a solitary journey. We each need active and positive connections with others if we are to be happy and productive. Enhancing Helpful People can help us to not only soften our journey, but it can contribute to our wealth, assist us with our career, and improve our relationships.

Helpful People can be people who already play a significant role in our life or strangers we’ve had chance meetings with either in person, by phone, or through the written word. They can also be messengers from the unseen or your unconscious and can include dream images, religious figures, gods, goddesses, angels, or guides. Even animals can be significant helpers.

The wisdom of I Ching, which is directly related to Feng Shui, can help us understand the nature of Helpful People. It assigns the trigram Heaven to this area revealing the strong link between Helpful People and compassion. When we experience compassion, we open ourselves to both giving and receiving assistance. This trigram is the most yang, or active, of all the trigrams letting us know that Helpful People is not a passive space. To attract helpful people into our life, we too must be a helpful person. One of the deeper teachings of this area also instructs us to actively reach out when we need assistance. In other words, we need to network with others in order to attract what we need.

There is also a connection between compassion and unconditional love, which is the acceptance of others while being realistically aware of their shortcomings. If you are judgmental of people whose beliefs and ways of being are different from yours, it is advisable to adjust this area. Also adjust this area if you have difficulty reaching out for support or extending a helping hand to others.

When all or part of this area is missing, overflowing with clutter, or lacking symbols appropriate to good Feng Shui, you may be blocking needed assistance from others. Some of the ways this might show up for you are that you may have ample helpers when you need them, but they don’t quite do the job right, don’t show up on time, or are difficult to be around. Another result can be difficulty with your relationships with men. This is true for both men and women. These problems can be especially noticeable if there is a lot of difficult to move clutter or “stagnant” storage in this area. In other words, stuff you haven’t used in years, but that you might need someday.

Often a garage occupies this space. Even though this area also relates to travel, cars coming and going can over-energize the space, causing the flow of energy to be erratic rather than nurturing. To soften this effect, avoid rushing as you drive in and out. Treat leaving and arriving as a sacred ritual honoring the transition between your private sanctuary and the outer world.

To enhance this area, place pictures of actual helpful people such as your friends and family here. Pictures or statues of strangers, angels, other heavenly forces, and mentors are appropriate. Metal and round objects can also have a good effect. If you love traveling, travel posters— especially of places you wish to visit—are ideal here.

May you have abundant helpers in your life!
